Calcium is essential to the body. We know it plays a role in bone health, but its function extends far beyond building and maintaining our skeleton.
Calcium is also involved in muscle contraction, nerve transmission, hormone release and the signalling processes that help our cells respond and function. And while calcium absorption is an important part of the story, it raises a bigger question : what happens to calcium once it becomes available to the body?
Beyond calcium absorption
Bioavailability is an important starting point. The form of calcium we consume, how it dissolves and the conditions within the digestive system can all influence how much is absorbed.
But absorption is only one part of calcium metabolism. Once calcium enters the body, its levels are tightly regulated through a complex relationship between the intestines, kidneys, bones and hormones. At a cellular level, calcium ions (Ca²⁺) act as messengers, helping to coordinate a wide range of biological processes.
This is where the conversation becomes particularly interesting. If conventional calcium can already be absorbed, what difference might the form of calcium make to how it behaves in the body?
Exploring ionic calcium and AIC
Join Jae Lee for a scientific discussion that moves beyond calcium intake and absorption to explore ionic calcium, calcium homeostasis and cellular signalling.
Jae will introduce AIC (Antiorbital Ionic Calcium), a proprietary calcium technology developed around the concept of delivering calcium in a free ionic form. The discussion will explore the science behind this approach and its proposed relevance to calcium regulation and physiological function.
The talk will consider:
-
- Calcium bioavailability: How different forms of calcium are dissolved and absorbed.
- Calcium homeostasis: How the body maintains calcium balance and why tight regulation matters.
- Cellular calcium signalling: How Ca²⁺ acts as a messenger in processes ranging from muscle contraction to hormone secretion.
- The ionic calcium question: What distinguishes AIC’s proposed approach, and what do we know about its effects and potential applications?
The question of calciumopathy
Calciumopathy refers to dysfunction in the way calcium is regulated and signalled within cells. Calcium plays a fundamental role in cellular communication and function, and when these signalling processes become disrupted, they may contribute to the development and progression of more than 150 degenerative diseases. AIC (Advanced Integrative Calcium therapy) aims to address this underlying dysfunction, with the potential to help restore healthier cellular calcium signalling. If this approach can effectively reverse calciumopathy, it could open new therapeutic possibilities for complex and challenging conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune disorders, metabolic syndrome and cancer.
